Our Journey into Thermal Imaging
Our journey began as we initiated thermal imaging with a FLIR E8 camera, originally purchased by Ryan. After conducting numerous inspections with input from experienced technicians, we developed a clear approach to how we wanted to handle our thermal inspections. As demand grew, we completed the Level 1 Thermal Imaging Course in Brisbane with Grant from Gtek, equipping us with deeper knowledge and upgrading our equipment to the more advanced FLIR E54 camera.
Why Thermal Imaging Matters
When performed correctly, Thermal Imaging Switchboard testing provides invaluable insights into the operational health of Switchboards and electrical systems. Compared to other preventive maintenance services like Test & Tag or RCD testing, the benefits of thermal imaging are far more impactful. For instance, an RCD might fail a test, but the likelihood of an incident, such as electrocution from a faulty appliance, is relatively low.
On the other hand, the risks associated with thermographic issues are much higher. Consider an overloaded lighting circuit operating at 90+ degrees Celsius — the potential for a fire is a real and significant threat. Similarly, a loose connection that generates heat over time can lead to severe damage and an increased probability of an electrical fire. From an asset management perspective, thermal imaging not only identifies these risks early but significantly reduces the chance of costly and dangerous incidents. This is why we strongly recommend our clients conduct an annual thermal imaging survey to safeguard their operations.
How Electrical Thermal Imaging Works?
Electrical thermal imaging, also known as infrared thermography, is a diagnostic technique that uses infrared cameras to detect heat signatures from electrical equipment. How We Conduct Thermal Imaging Inspections
Through thermal imaging, we can identify two primary fault types: overloads and loose connections. Overload faults can cause equipment to run hotter than normal, while loose connections generate excessive heat over time, leading to potential damage. By using the FLIR Thermal Studio and advanced reporting tools, we provide clients with detailed PDF reports that clearly outline any issues detected.
